Hamadan

This is the capital city of Hamadan province. It is one of the oldest cities in Iran, reaching as far back as Sumerian times, when one of the most influential, ancient world cities – Ecbatana – was founded.

Hamadan and the surrounding towns, villages and hamlets are known for their ancient carpet-weaving traditions.

Especially valued are carpets made in Malayer (formerly known as Dowlatabad). Their designs are geometrical, often with the ornamental motifs of fish and diamonds (Herati style ornamentation). Malayer carpets woven before 1935s are known for their quaint color combinations, peculiar oblong shape and distinct method of weaving which made them especially valuable and desired among collectors, as well as experts.
